The final draft all depends on the hands that made the rod. Bamboo fishing rods are of different types and one of which is the split bamboo fly rod. A split cane or split bamboo fly rod is known for their solid mass, flexibility, strength and fine forms.

The making of a split cane fly rod isn’t that easy and requires the most accurate measurement of angles and planes, which makes this type superior from other bamboo rods.

First find yourself a high quality bamboo Culm and prepare all other tools needed to make a split bamboo fly rod for yourself. It is noteworthy to mention that split bamboo fly rods are not made from the average bamboos used in making rods. Tonkin Cane is specifically used in making a split cane fly rod. Then, there must be planes, dial calipers, scraper plane, and other necessary materials.

The making of this type of rod requires a preliminary, secondary and a final plan. Indeed, its making is labor-intensive. Once the materials are in, start by flattening the nodes of the Culm. The bamboo pole is then split into 6-8 large strips with a special cutter called froe. These strips are again split into strips. The node portion is heated to soften the bamboo and thereafter, clamp firmly the strips until it cooled.

In the preliminary planning, the bamboo strip is planned at 60 degree angle. Then place another strip in the second planning form having the 60 degree angle making an equilateral triangle section. Next is to bind them with a string and heating until it dried and straighten. Heating drives away the excesses moisture in the canes which makes it straighter and stiff. Then the bamboo strips will be tapered.

Tapering can be manual or with the use of a machine with an infinitesimal care. After all processes have been finished, the glue residue must be sand off. This will help revealing the power fibers of the canes. Then fit in the suction fit nickel silver ferrules and the champagne-grade cork shrives intended for handle. Shape the handle, fit in the reel seat, and attach the line guides made of hard steel.
For final touches, varnish the split bamboo fly rod. These are just some of the steps in making a split cane bamboo rod. For more details, there are now commercially available instructional materials on how to make a rod for your own use. Make sure to have all the materials and plane accurate angles for an immaculate result.
